Or trousers, as we call them here in the UK.
Pants just fitted better in the title, and after Friday’s “pockets in my pants” discussion the word is on my mind. I am in need of trousers for short legs.
I have long-standing issues with trousers. I think they make me look odd. They are uncomfortable when they cut in across my stomach, often accentuate my wide hips and make my legs look stumpy unless I wear them with high heels, which kind of counteracts the “comfortable” aspect of trousers.
Nonetheless, recently I have been looking to add more trousers to my wardrobe. Not least because I need more options for occasions when skirts may not be practical for some reason, such as occasions when you might be required to clamber over things, or jump on a bouncy castle. To be honest, those occasions don’t come up that often, but I think I could do with expanding the number of pairs of non denim trousers that I own that can be worn with flat shoes. I have short legs, so finding trousers that can be worn with flat shoes is harder than you think.
At the moment I own 1. Yes, 1 pair of non denim trousers that I can wear with flat shoes. They are black. I think I should get something a little more interesting. So today’s post is basically all the not black, not denim trousers for short legs that I am perusing.
Bonnie Sherwood Check Trousers
I am quite taken with these. As a teenager I had a pair of tartan trousers that I loved, and in my old age I am quite taken with recreating the look. They have a high waist, so won’t be too uncomfortable, and a 27″ inside leg, which means I can definitely wear them with flat shoes.
Maddie Velvet Leopard Trousers
My little rock n roll heart wants a pair of leopard print trousers SO MUCH. Like SO MUCH. These are also absurdly cheap in the sale. Sadly the inside leg is also far too long, but maybe I can take them up? Or, more likely, get someone else to take them up for me.
Petite Gingham Skinny Fit Trousers
These are from the ASOS petite range, so should be fine in leg length. I’m thinking gingham could be quite cute for Summer with open toed shoes.
High Waist Skinny Fit Trousers in Forest Green
These are a similar style to my black ones, so they should fit. Forest green is a bit different from black, but still pretty understated. These could actually be a very versatile addition to my wardrobe!
Geometric print bengaline trousers
Bengaline is a pretty forgiving fabric, so these should be comfortable. The waist looks like it might be a little low, but the leg length should hit the bottom of my calf/top of ankle, so a good length for wearing with flat shoes.
Richmond 7/8 Trousers
Lovely Boden do most of their clothing with a petite option which should mean that these 7/8 trousers will actually be 7/8 on me instead of regular length. Hurrah! They do several funky prints and some plain colours, though I find myself drawn to these black and white geometric prints. I think the waistband looks a little low, so maybe ones to wear with an untucked longer line top rather than tucked in.

I just got a pair of lady k loves May trousers and they have a 26.5 inseam. Had to size up in the plain ones but they do prints too. Also they are really great cut and quality for those of us with a small waist and bigger hips.

I have short legs (that will not be a surprise) with a 29″ inner measurement and I find Lindy Bops capris to be ideal, but I’m not sure if they actually make them anymore?? At one point they had about 8 different colourways and I bought three of them because they worked so well for me. So, that sucks. If they pop up for resale though it could be worth a go. Just a note on the Bonnies – I have two pairs of these and both of them were ridiculously long, so I’m not sure if they’ve changed the style or if that measurement on the website is wrong, but I’m very suspicious of it. Especially as that model is quite tall and they’re the right length on her…
Mostly, though, I just buy the trousers I want and either roll them up or get them altered. Even I can manage a hem job with hem tape though, so sometimes I even do it myself…
I have heard that Lady K are planning to release petite jeans now that their main range has been funded on the Kickstarter, so that could be worth keeping an eye out for!

I am taller than you (at 5’8″) but most trousers are still too long on me to wear with flats. It costs between £8 and £12 – and that’s in LONDON – to shorten a pair of trews, often within a couple of days (or 20 minutes if you cry). Seriously well worth it. Most flattering? I like a 40s swing of Freddie’s cigarette trousers….
Samantha, much cheaper to learn to hem them yourself. That’s what I do. Take a basic sewing course and it’ll change clothing for you, I promise. It’ll pay for itself. Or youtube will show you how if you know how to operate a sewing machine
To be honest, I do do my own – unless they’re turn ups which I find far too fiddly to get right!! It was more to make the point that it’s so easy and quick (and relatively cheap) to do – instead of trousers languishing in the wardrobe, unworn because they are too long and only work for posh nights out with heels. It’s surprising how often people admit that happens!!
I’m 5ft. I buy from Dorothy Perkins usually. I also have to hem all of my jeans and some trousers but I do that myself so that’s not a problem
Not sure about actual trousers, but I’m 5’4 I’ve bought jeans from M&S and Gap recently in a petite length which both work with flats (well I think they do anyway!). Worth noting I have the opposite shape though – I have no hips (sob) and a sizeable midriff so not sure what the fit would be like for a more ladylike figure!
