I actually got married 10 years ago.
I also have no idea if any of you are getting married, are you? If you are then I can’t imagine that this is the place you come to seek out tips for your wedding, but still, I really wanted to share this book with you.
I am a massive, massive fan of Lauren Rennells books, and any lady with vintage leanings worth her salt will tell you that her retro make up and vintage hair books are awesome resources. When she got in touch about her new book I did um and ah a bit, due to the whole aforementioned “not getting married” thing, but apparently the full title is:

So that’s ok then.
Much like the original book, this one starts with a section of really useful tips and building blocks to create vintage inspired styles. Where as the original Vintage Hairstyling book is aimed at what I think of as “every day” vintage styling, this book is aimed at being able to create a style for a big occasion, and it focuses less on wet sets and brush outs, and more on using heated appliances and techniques that will work in the salon on one day. It also contains really useful tips on using vintage photographs as inspiration, and how to convert those into the style you are looking for, considering the silhouette, focal point and how the style is constructed as well as some hair techniques I’d not seen before, such as “sewing” hair to keep it in place without grips and how to create a ponytail without hair slipping out of place.
The book then moves onto detailed instructions with step-by-step photos to create (at my count!) 29 vintage inspired hair styles ranging from a simple beehive to more elaborate finger waved styles. One of the things I like about the instructions is that they take into account how a style will last throughout an occasion, and contain comments and tips on how it will photograph and move during the day. Vital for a wedding, but also worth considering if you’re going somewhere fancy!
There are useful tips in this book for both professional hair stylists and adventurous amateurs who want to step up their hair game for a special occasion! If you’re planning a hair style for an event it’s a handy resource for inspiration, and also to subtly lend your hairdresser to make doubly sure they know what they are doing!
