Retro Chick Reviews – Soap & Glory Super-Colour Fabulipstick

Well, this is SUPPOSED to be part of the red lipstick review series.

You’ll notice however, that it doesn’t start with a chart. The reason for that is that this is most definitely not a red lipstick. Still, it’s a very good lipstick, so it’s worth reviewing anyway! I have a back log of red lipsticks to review, with 3 queued up at present, but I’m sure I’ll get to them eventually! I currently have a Superdrug cheapy one, a Revlon one and a MAC to review, so do let me know if there’s one you’d like to see first.

The “not red at all” lipstick I am reviewing today is Soap & Glory’s Super-Colour Fabulipstick from their new cosmetics range in shade Red My Lips. It’s available from Boots at £9.

The Blurb

According to the website this is a collagen boosting lipstick with plumping pre-peptides. Whatever they are.

The blurb says

“Featuring ULTIMELTâ„¢ lip shine & shaping technology, 3-D PLUMPâ„¢ peptide complex, Shea Butter, Monoi Butter & Vitamin E. Hyaluronic acid and Ceramide 2 (for aging repair and visible wrinkle reduction) help to give a soft, smooth, dewy, plump colour-fill pout. “

The Pros

This is a very pleasant moisturising lipstick. I think we’ve already established that whatever they call it, this lipstick is not red. It is, however, a very nice neutral shade. I found the colour very easy to wear, I felt it was a sort of beigey pink really. The intensity was enough to add colour, but it didn’t really need a lipliner.

For a moisturising lipstick I found it lasted very well. I needed to reapply after eating, but that was it. It didn’t bleed or feather or crack, or wear off in an irritating and unattractive fashion. Being moisturising it had a slight sheen, but wasn’t too glossy or sticky, all in all the texture was just right! I like to be able to feel that I’m wearing lipstick, but I don’t like it gritty or cloying. It applied easily and was easy to top up without having to remove the old lipstick. And it smelt quite pleasant too.

The packaging was fairly sturdy, it’s survived a couple of weeks of kicking around in the bottom of bag without too much trouble, even the pink writing on the side hasn’t scratched or rubbed. I also liked that it had S&G embossed on the lipstick, but I’m a mug for those little touches.

The Cons

As ever I remain entirely unconvinced by the claims of lipsticks to combat wrinkles or somehow plump up my lips through the action of anything other than the fact that it looks slightly glossy. ULTIMELTâ„¢ , 3-D PLUMPâ„¢ , pre-peptides and all that other gumph all sounds like drivel to encourage you to part with £9 on the basis that this isn’t just lipstick, oh no, it’s a beauty treatment and very nearly a medicine. It isn’t it’s a lipstick, a good quality, nice smelling, fairly long lasting and easy to apply lipstick, but still just a lipstick.

I was also a little disappointed in the packaging. Every time I mention packaging someone berates me for being shallow, but so what, it’s important! Soap and Glory are well known for their kitschy pink packaging on their bathing and skin care range, and the outside of the box of the lipstick ties in with that. Inside, however, was a fairly plain black lipstick case with pink writing. There’s nothing wrong with it per se, it just didn’t feel like they’d thought about it very hard. I am guessing that cute and kitschy BeneFit would be one of their main competitors in the cosmetics market, and the packaging just doesn’t live up to the hype. Though it’s worth noting they are slightly cheaper!

The Verdict

A very nice, easy wearing, every day lipstick. It’s certainly become one of my “fling in the bottom of my handbag” lipsticks, which is always a good sign.

The price possibly pushes it a little further towards the premium end of the market than it really deserves, but it’s still just about worth it!

It’s not red though.
