Birthday Nautical Style in Canary Wharf

This weekend it was my birthday.

Mr Chick and I share a birthday, and on the Saturday night, which was our actual birthday, we had a great time as the guests of Novotel in Canary Wharf. I shall tell you about that in more detail later on this week. Today I am preparing for a visit from family, so  we’re doing everything in the wrong order and sharing Sundays outfit before we do Saturday. How confusing!

On Sunday we went for a little wander round the nicer bits of Canary Wharf in the sunshine and stopped to take outfit photos with a background of shiny glass and chrome (and a foreground of pigeons).

I would like you to bear in mind that I am pretty horrifically hungover in these photos. Sunglasses and lipstick are definitely the way to hide it. I also had a long journey back to Norwich to come, so this outfit was picked with comfort in mind. The trousers are the Heyday! beach pyjamas in blue and they are so comfortable that I may never take them off. The fabric is soft and drapey and they are light easy to move in. Literally a dream pair of trousers for someone who often finds trousers super uncomfortable.

The fabric does get a little creased in wear, as you can see in the photos, but I quite like it. I think it looks casually rumpled. Like “hey, I’m relaxed yet stylish”.

In fact, the only downside of these trousers is also one of their main benefits, they’re really wide legged. This is a style that LOOKS elegant and FEELS comfortable, but is a potential death trap for clumsy people who might, just for instance, decide to take their apple juice up to the roof terrace after breakfast and then get their foot caught in their own trousers, fall up the stairs and spill apple juice all over the place. Just as an example you understand. This is not the sort of thing *I* would do as obviously I am forever poised and elegant and not a clumsy fool, oh no.

Canary Wharf also confronted me with one of my regular problems when taking outfit photos.

That is that if there is an animal of any kind around Mr Chick finds it far more interesting to take photos of than me. I’ve been upstaged by cats and horses in the past, but this time it was pigeons.

Thanks for focusing on the pigeons and leaving me as background Mr Chick.

  1. You look great!

  2. A belated happy birthday! Oh the perils of wide leg trousers – I find they can get caught on the lever under my car seat. Nearly ripped a leg off (of the trousers) a couple of times!! X

    1. Eek! That’s not happened to me yet!

  3. Happy birthday! At least navy doesn’t show apple juice stains…

    1. That wasn’t me that did that. That was someone else, so I wouldn’t know, obvs 😉

  4. Love this outfit!

I can’t count the number of times I’ve tripped or almost did a major face plant going up the stairs in one of my vintage maxi dresses. They can be a bit of a health hazard.

Upstaged by pigeons. For your birthday no less.

The guy on the right is giving me the evil eye and freaking me out.

    bisous

  5. Happy birthday! And you look like you’re having a blast, hangover or no. Love the pants and the striped top.
My boyfriend has is own thing – he takes these really unflattering photos of me and is like “but that’s what you actually look like! You’re not a fairy princess floating through life.” The point is that I want to fool people into thinking that I am!

  6. I love wide legged trousers but I always rip over in them and nearly caused an injury on some stairs so I’ll have to settle for bootcut versions instead. Love seeing them on other people

  7. I can only wear wide leg trousers with heels! I live in trousers (opposite to you, they’re my default and leggings/opaques trick me when I wear skirts), and especially flares, and I still haven’t got the hang of the really wide ones!

  8. I did a little chuckle at the last pic, but Mr Chick has redeemed himself because the rest of the photos are beautiful! My fella has a knack of only pressing the shutter when I’m blinking.

  9. This is a fabulous outfit, you look fantastic! Such a simple but effective pairing of two lovely items. It’s not too dressy but definitely still looks classy. Would completely agree with you that trousers can often be uncomfortable. It’s so rare to find a pair that fit comfortably and in all areas and you can move around in easily. Sending belated birthday wishes!
