Where Do Your Outfits Start?

Well?

Do you see a whole outfit on someone else and want to recreate the look? Do you have a “theme” in mind and build from there? Or do you build your outfits around one piece?

I think I probably use all of these at times, but most commonly I start with one thing that I want to wear and build around it.

This outfits inspiration started with this vintage scarf clip. It belonged to Mr Chicks grandmother and came to me in a cute snakeskin box. I’ve been wanting to wear it for a while but I haven’t been able to make it fit. On a casual outfit it looked to dressy and on a smart oufit it looked too prim. Then whilst looking for ways to keep ridiculously overgrown fringe out of my eyes I tried clipping it to a scarf in my hair.

The look made me feel like I was heading off on a cruise, so I teamed it with a breton stripe top. I rarely wear jeans, but for a trip to the local pub to play the quiz machine and drink pints of beer it seemed like the best option.

Not the most exciting outfit in the world, but even jeans and a T shirt need thinking about a little bit….

A fun way, I think, is to view Etsy Treasury lists for inspiration, as they are often tied together, in a creative, harmonious manner.

Like you, I will often begin with a small jewel or accessory item, and build from there. Or, it could be a vintage textile pattern that gets me going, and then, I mix in other patterns, textures, and colours.

I often start with a colour and expand out from there. On occasion, I have a piece I want to wear and attempt to build on that.

Most of my outfits come by chance – I’ll throw one thing on as a base, and then gradually keep trying out the rest of the outfit until I’m happy with the end result!

I pick an item then choose a few more in a couple of harmonious colours so I can layer. I like a layered look and I like colour. I try not to go over three main colours though to keep it from getting too wild! Strangely enough I have had dreams of some of my outfits before I put them together.

Same, usually one piece I want to wear and I build from that. 🙂

It can be anything from my mood to the weather or simply whatever my cirrent lil’ obsession is! I tend to see things on other people that I like and I try to incorporate that into my wardrobe with what I have. For instance I recently saw a girl I know with a pair of grey legwarmers tucked into her boots and I rolled down my grey knee high socks to create a similar effect. I’ve been buying a lot more dresses recently too and my dislike of leggings has meant I know have quite a lot of tights which are often the starting point of an outfit. There are certain people I always look to for inspiration with clothes and fashion but comfort, warmth and not taking too long in the morning are all big factors too!! :]
