What Are You Wearing? A Little Bit Sporty and a Product Review

A couple of weeks ago I was contacted by Very.co.uk and asked if I would like some free clothes.

To be honest, that probably comes a close second to asking me if I want free beer. I’d never looked at the site before, as I rarely shop on catalogue sites or the High Street, so I had a quick look, liked the selection available, and said yes.

I had recently watched an episode of Poirot where someone wore a cardigan with 2 big bows on the front as a top with a pencil skirt and I had the urge to replicate the look in a 1930s kind of way. (She later turned out to be the murderer, should I be taking style tips from murderers?)

So, after much deliberation, I chose a pair of white keds and a nautical cardigan.

The bits arrived at the weekend, so today I got to try out my look.

A bit of a product review. The reason I agreed to Very’s offer is that I think their website is fantastic. They have a massive choice, prices seemed reasonable, and, the deciding factor, they offer a customer review function on each item.

The Keds are amazing, comfortable and they look great. I ordered a size 5, despite normally taking a 6, because Very’s customer review function contained lots of reviews saying they ran big and to order a smaller size.

The cardigan, however, isn’t great. If I’d spent £25 of my own money on it it would be going straight back. It looks very pretty, but the material is so thin that it pulls out of shape in about 10 seconds. You can probably see it’s already gaping around the buttons slightly and I suspect that a couple of washes will relegate it to a shapeless mass, which is pretty poor for £25. That said, I was fully warned by the customer reviews under the item that it was terrible material, so I have only myself to blame.

❤ Cardigan - Love Label ❤ Pencil Skirt - Vintage ❤ Shoes - Keds ❤

I adore this pencil skirt, though it’s actually a little small right now, so a bit of self denial is in order till it fits properly. It has the most gorgeous pleating detail at the hip, though it’s sadly not that clear in the pictures. Stupid camera.

I also, in keeping with the 1930s inspiration, had a quick go at finger waving my hair this morning.

A bit of setting lotion, a few kirby grips and a blast with a hair dryer and I was actually very pleased with the result! It’s at least worth having another try with a bit more time and leaving it to dry properly. (I did attempt a kind of wan 30s film star, eyes closed look there, but I might just look like I’m having a nap)

What do you think? Are Finger waves worth trying again?

Oh definitely try the finger waves again. They look great, just perhaps need a bit more definition to keep them looking fab all day. I am yet to try finger waving but I am guessing it is like anything, it just takes practise. People are always amazwed when I do my hair in Victory rolls etc but at the end of the day back then they wore their hair like it daily so it can’t be that hard once you know what you’re doing can it?

I wish Very would get in touch with me and offer me free gear for a review! My blog is clearly not in their radar – I must work on that – you look fab in their stuff though so good on you. xxx

Yes, I think if I maybe pinned them at night and left them to dry they’d last longer with more definition. This only had half an hour drying time and a blast with a hair dryer!

If very do get in touch, I wouldn’t get that cardigan 😉

That cardie looks super-cute. Shame about the quality but it sounds like Very is a great site for customer reviews – I’ll have to check it out.

I really liked the customer review thing. There were a lot of things that looked pretty but I discarded because of reports of being too short in the body, or a bad fit etc.

That’s a shame about the cardie, it looks lovely!

And YES finger waves! I want to try them! Though what is setting lotion?

Setting lotion is quite an old fashioned product, it’s a liquid in a bottle. I use a few drops on wet hair, other people dilute it with water and use it that way.

It can actually be quite hard to find, though I’ve heard people say that there is a brand called “lottabody” that you can get in the ethnic hair section in chemists. Mine is called Amami and it’s an “old lady” product for wet set hair.

    Definitely do it again.

    How do I do it?

finger waves are a case of practice, practice, practice. When I had to do them for my hairdresing course they were a pain to get right! If you use sectioning clips you can get a deeper wave effect which does look fab for the evenings.

Loving the cricket jumper btw. I have a vintage one on my wish list. Sadly my lack of funds isn’t being very kind to my wishes though!

Love the cardigan. It suits you really well and you paired it so well with the skirt. I haven’t bought a pair of keds for the same reason. If someone does want a pair, I’d recommend a pair of vans instead.

I am far too lazy for finger waves myself, but I think yours are lovely. And I am sad the sweater wasn’t up to snuff because it is so cute~!

    I love your hair!

The top looks cute, pity it is not the best quality…

Ah, that’s such a shame about the cardi – I’ve had my eye on it for a few weeks now, being a sucker for all things nautical, so dissapointed to hear it’s not great quality.

Love the finger waves, though – I say definitely try again!

The headline made me laugh! Also, good for you for an honest review even though clothes were free.
