Retro Chick Goes SHOPPING!

Oooh, look at me posting at 4pm in the afternoon.

I haven’t done that for years. Well, that’s because this is a frivolous post. This morning I gave myself a morning off to go shopping. I trawled the Charity Shops of Banbury, and pretty much came up a blank, half of them were almost completely empty and those of them that weren’t for some reason thought I was willing to part with £15 for a dress just because it was from Next.

I did, however, wander into Topshop. Not something I do very often as I find their prices exasperating, but they did have a sale on.

I bought 2 beret hats with bows on, one for £3 and one for £1 and A CAPE!!

Back in January 2010 I wrote a post with 4 things I’d always wanted, but never had and a cloak (or cape) was one of them! The collars a bit higher than I would ideally like it, hence the “chin disappearing into collar” thing in the above photo, but it’s gorgeous. Lined in khaki satin with gilt buttons, and it was only £20, reduced from £89 in the sale.

I am SO excited!

So what it March really isn’t the right time to be buying heavy wool capes. It’s not like an English Summer last longer than 6 weeks anyway…..

You might also notice my new umbrella in that photo. I bought it at a garden centre at the weekend for £12.99. Phew, all these new things, I feel quite spoilt!

While we’re here I might as well play show and tell with a few pictures from the weekend too.

On a trip to Biddys Tea Room they kindly gave me some of their yummy biscuits to take home as a Thank You for the piece I wrote on Vintage Norwich

Yes, yes, this IS a whole box of Poirot books, bought at the Boot Fair…..

And lastly, how fabulous is this 1930s Diamond China coffee set? Mr Chicks Mum came down to visit from Aberdeen this weekend and bought it with her all the way down on the train in her suitcase (the 2 odd coffee cups were £1 each from the Norwich Flea Market). She also bought a gorgeous early 30s silk chiffon dress, but more on that another time!

  1. gorgeous cape! and what a bargain, very impressed! You are looking very pretty today.
Now I just want fancy biscuits with a lovely cup of tea…but I’m off to do some more flat hunting 🙁

  2. That cape’s a superb bargain. I can’t stand Toppers for price and I’m usually the oldest/frumpiest/portliest person in there… online/sale I can forgive them though!

  3. I love that 1930s coffee set, fabulous!

Perdita I beg to differ I went into Topshop for the first time in years the other day and I was without a doubt the oldest/portliest person in there!

    1. Well, actually today I WAS the frumpiest person in there. I didn’t care as I bought a cape, wheeeeee!

      1. Let’s stage a Topshop invasion! Sensibly, of course. One doesn’t want to go wild in the aisles.

    1. I know! She just has this stuff “laying around” HOW!!!????

I got some lovely deco dress clips and some handbags off her too.

I need an underslip for the dress as it’s missing it’s bottom layer, but it is lovely. I’m going to wear it to my cocktail party I think

  7. Excellent buys! Those biccies look scrummy.

  8. Capes? Biscuits? Umbrellas? Teacups? FANTASTIC! Love the cape 🙂

  9. What fabulous buys. £20 for the cape is fabulous and I love the brolly, it reminds me of My Fair Lady. Glad you are treating yourself xx

    1. Every time I look at it I start singing “Every Duke, and Earl and Peer, is here…”

ooh yes Lottie that was what I was trying to remember! My fair lady.
Gemma – I’m so glad you got your cape, so versatile, and the biccys look yummy but I’d rather have cake 😉
Can’t wait to see your dress, love the 30s style but have too many curvy bits to pull it off myself.
I wish I had a relative with some stuff lying about! I’m gonna invest in a china dinner set when I’ve moved house/ had the baby/ saved up! I keep seeing bargains on ebay but it’ll have to wait!

  11. I love all your buys. i don’t often go in Topshop but they do occasionally have some good stuff.

  12. Oh what a wonderful look! You wear that cape well Mrs. What a bargain too. I love your makeup, you look very natural looking. Gorg umbrella too 🙂

    1. Thank you! I have winged eyeliner on, but I just went for neutral lips today!

What lovely things to be given!!!! I found some of those Babycham glasses at the weekend. Got to love car boots!!!! X

  15. Beautiful cape, I’m not normally a Topshop shopper, but I may have to pay a visit! And I LOVE the umbrella, can’t believe it was from Notcutts!! You look stunning in the pictures!

Have you heard of Mad Hatters Tea Shop in Wymondham? It’s at the back of Diva, which is a lovely clothes shop. I was treated to Afternoon Tea there and the mismatched china was very cute and homemade cakes delicious! I recommend!!

  16. That cape is gorgeous! What a bargain too. Topshop’s quality seems to be pretty good for coats, so it should last you a while. Am now pondering checking out the sale at lunch time as I’m a stones throw from the Oxford Circus branch…

Hurruh you have your cape at last! What a bargain too. My cape is still in pieces :-/ l keep on yelling Lord C he need to earn more so that l can work part time and spend more time sewing, but he just doesn’t listen….xx

  18. I love the cape!! It’s gorgeous. I haven’t made it to Biddys yet, but it’s on my list of things to do. I keep hearing amazing stuff about it x

  19. Ah Banbury! As I remember the high street was always rammed with charity shops… I’m wondering if that’s because the business rates / rent there were always so savage that only charities could afford them!

Some brill bargains you’ve got there, I always get my books from car boots and the charity shops as most of the time they are always in such good condition. Keep on shopping!

  20. Love your cape and great to see a bit more of your brolly after your tweet. That coffee set is wonderful too. I love the pattern.

  21. Gorgeous cape!!! And fantastically jealous of your box of books!! What a treasure trove of great finds!!
