I can’t quite look forward to 2021 as I know that some of it will definitely be worse than 2020. But we can hope that it might end in a better place than it starts for all of us.

#teamfabletics Not going to lie, when I picked thi #teamfabletics Not going to lie, when I picked this set, I was not thinking about exercise.

No. What I was thinking was how cosy this chunky fleecy jumper looked, and I was right.

The seamless bra and leggings set underneath (swipe to see the bra) are also super comfy, and perfect for doing Yoga or my weekly Zoom Pilates class. 

I’m not entirely sure on the colour. I think it makes me look like I forgot to put trousers on (Fun fact, I once had a blog post banned from Google Ads for nudity because I was wearing pink leggings), but they are a perfect fit.

I’m wearing a Medium in all the pieces. It’s 2 leggings for £24 or 50% off an outfit this month. Link is in my bio.

Now I’m off to sit on the sofa which is more comfy but less picturesque than the floor by the fireplace.

GROWTH AND CHANGE You know what, I haven’t alwa GROWTH AND CHANGE

You know what, I haven’t always liked exercise.

I’m 41 and for most of my life I didn’t think exercise could be for anything other than weight loss and burning calories.

I did a couple of Race for Life’s, I bought a Davina DVD and I had a few short lived gym memberships over the years. But mostly I wanted to have a good time, drink wine, eat pizza, buy nice frocks and stay up late, and any exercise or dieting I did was related to the frocks thing.

Swipe right to the second picture and you’ll see me doing my first 5k run that wasn’t a Race for Life. I signed up for it in 2012 in an attempt to “get fit” and lose weight. I was 33.

I started a fitness blog where I documented how much weight I lost or gained each month and I beat myself up for eating badly.

Whilst training for that race I gradually discovered I loved it. I signed up for 10ks, I learned about nutrition, then I started playing Roller Derby and lifting weights.

I learned that exercise was about more than aesthetics and that food and nutrition was about more than weight loss. I thought about health, fitness and performance.

Then I learned that moving for the love of it was ok, even if you didn’t have a plan or a goal, that actually your weight has nothing to do with health, and that food and nutrition can be about happiness, and comfort and that finding your balance and your happy place with food and exercise is a long journey.

I think this journey makes me a better coach now. I know how you feel when you can’t be bothered today, or you doubt yourself, or you feel like you’re not making progress. I haven’t been “sporty” since I was a teenager and always loved to exercise.

I guess what I’m musing on is that we all grow and change through our lives. The opinions and behaviours we have at 20 won’t be the same ones we have at 40, or 60. And that’s ok, in fact, it’s brilliant. If you don’t occasionally look back at something you thought 10 years ago and think “hmmm” then what have you been doing for the last 10 years?

Gosh it’s cold!

 I think my fingers are just warming up after spending 4 hours outside coaching this morning.

Lockdown 2.0 has sent us back outside as the gyms are shut, but it’s not June anymore guys and we really are at the whim of the good old English weather.

It quickly became apparent that my lightweight waterproof outdoor coat and a pair of regular leggings wasn’t going to cut it, so a set of @sweatybetty thermodynamics top and leggings became an essential purchase. This is not an ad, I paid for them myself, but I can highly recommend their toastiness to anyone else who needs warm sports kit! I also treated myself to an @underarmouruk ColdGear jacket so I’m super snuggly, apart from my feet and fingers. 

A rechargeable hand warmer is on its way, but I do need a recommendation though. Warm waterproof socks. Do they exist? My shoes get wet on the grass and I lose the feeling in my toes!

#teamfabletics It feels like I take 1 step forward #teamfabletics It feels like I take 1 step forward and 2 steps back in recovering from this back injury.

Last week I started Couch to 5k in an attempt to get back into regular running and build up distances gradually. But since then my back has got worse, and now I can’t pick the Pugs up again. 🙄

I’m carrying on with Couch to 5k and taking it slow, and I’m also making sure I pay more attention to my stretching by doing a short 7 minute Post Run Yoga stretch when I get back.

Hopefully soon it will ease off and I can get back to weights!

Yesterday we should have been in a Shepherds Hut o Yesterday we should have been in a Shepherds Hut on @elmleynature celebrating our 15th Anniversary. But sadly lockdown cancelled our second (out of 2!) planned trip this year.

Instead we took a flask of chilli and mulled cider out for a lunchtime walk, and then picked up an amazing oven-ready dinner from @restbenedicts which we ate in the garden lit by fairy lights.

We’ve rebooked our trips for next year, and we’ll just try and keep making special lockdown memories.

We’re very lucky to have so many amazing spaces to spend time right on our doorstep.

It’s time for that Halloween 15 minute core workout I promised you!

You can also enjoy the fact that the sound wasn’t loud enough on the live video so I attempted to add a Zombie groan and Werewolf howl track afterwards and I sound like an idiot.

4 exercises. Repeat 3x

ZOMBIE LEANS x 10 - keep your core tight and your body straight. Lean back as far as you can go and squeeze your glutes to come back up. Don’t forget your Zombie Groans!
*make it easier* tuck your toes and don’t lean back as far!

SPIDER CRAWLS x 10 - Start in a plank and bring your knee outside your elbow as you crawl forward with the other hand. Do 5 forwards and back. If you don’t have space like I don’t the second video is the version with no moving!
*make it easier* keep your hands still and just bring your knee to your elbow.

FULL MOONS x 10 - grab your pumpkin (or a weighted ball) and get into a deep wide squat. Try and keep your shoulders and body level as you rotate your arms in a circle. 5 each way and don’t forget your Werewolf howls!

DEADBUGS x 10 - we’ll finish with a Halloween classic core exercise. Push your back into the floor like you’re trying to make an imprint in sand and use your abs to keep it there as you move the opposite arm and leg. The lower you move the harder it is.
*make it easier* keep your feet flat on the floor and raise one leg at a time as you extend.

So today is World Mental Health Day. I’ve strug So today is World Mental Health Day.

I’ve struggled with anxiety for years, but this year has really been a struggle and I was spiralling a little back into a place I haven’t been in for years.

A conversation with my Dad made me finally pluck up the courage to ask for help. I went and spoke to my GP and have been prescribed anti depressants.

I hate asking for help. I’m fiercely independent (this is not always a good thing!) and after years of managing things myself with meditation and supplements like St Johns Wort and 5-HTP it was a big step for me to admit this wasn’t something I could manage myself anymore.

I recognised the signs that I was sinking and asked for help before I hit the bottom.

This has been a tough year for a lot of people. Whatever you have going on in your life the added “global pandemic” layer is going to make it harder.

Never feel bad if you’re struggling, no matter how small you think your problems are in comparison to other people’s, remember they’re yours and the closer you are to them the bigger they look.

Struggling with your mental health is not weakness, show your strength by reaching out and asking for help when you need it. Everyone’s dealing with their own stuff and it’s easy to miss when someone is struggling. No matter how much you care about them.

The Marriott’s Way 10k was cancelled this year a The Marriott’s Way 10k was cancelled this year and replaced with a virtual race. So this morning I headed out to the Marriott’s Way to do 10k and earn my medal!

Honestly, when I signed up I wasn’t expecting to have not run for nearly 2 months because of a heat wave and an injured back, so I ran/walked the distance. My backs a little twingy, but nothing a nice bath won’t fix and it felt SO GOOD to be running again, even if I was exhausted by the end!

Set backs happen, but if you focus on enjoying the journey rather than the destination they’re a lot easier to deal with!

I didn’t get a photo of my sweaty face this morning, so this is a photo of me finishing the real life Marriott’s Way 10k in a considerably faster time back in 2018.

THREE GOOD THINGS

I might be the only person who’s loving this rainy weather. I had thought about heading out for a run as my back is much better, but I’m happy to postpone that a few more days in favour of snuggling on the sofa with the Pugs in front of an open fire and watching Poirot.

I know I’m very lucky to have had this weather over days when I’ve been working from home and I’d have no doubt enjoyed it less if I had to go out.

I’ve had some wobbles with my mental health lately and I’ve taken a step back to remind myself of all the good things in my life.

Get yourself a fancy notebook or a note on your phone and every day try and think of 3 good things. Whether it’s listening to the wind and rain from a cosy sofa, a delicious dinner or your favourite TV show being back on, just the little things that make up the minutiae of our lives that it’s so easy to let drift by unregarded.
